Behavioral Theories of Learning

Grade-Level Lesson Plan

Objective: This lesson plan is used to demonstrate principles of behaviorism including shaping, group contingencies, feedback, and reinforcement schedules.

Implementation: This lesson involves teaching students five Chinese characters. I give each student a name tent with their name in English and Chinese. Then I read a Chinese folk tale that involves the characters we'll be learning. I then outline the group contingency - if everyone learns the characters, we'll have a treat at the end. I teach the first character one step at a time, asking them to hold up their work after each stroke. On the next character, I demonstrate on the board and they hold it up at the end. Then I have a student come up and demonstrate how to do it. Finally, I let them work on their own. They work together to review so that everyone will pass the quiz at the end. While they work, I begin with continuous reinforcement using specific feedback and gradually reduce to intermittent reinforcement. We end with a quiz and then a treat.
